Waikato WTP Upgrade - Stage 3 & 3A

Client

Beca / Watercare Services Ltd

We provided design continuity for the project teams and led the design development of the upgrades.

Our Role

Preliminary and Detailed Process Design

We were engaged by Beca to lead the process design for the Stage 3 $48M upgrade of Watercare Services Ltd’s Waikato WTP. The plant capacity was expanded from 75 ML/d to 125 ML/d. The upgrade included the addition of two new super-pulsator clarifiers, three new trains of UF membranes, three new BAC filters, a new chlorine contact tank, new treated water pump and a new sludge centrifuge.

We were then engaged by Beca to lead the process design for the Stage 3A $10M upgrade of the plant. In this upgrade the plant capacity was expanded from 125 ML/d to 150 ML/d. It included the fit out of a 12th membrane train, 8th BAC filter and addition of a 6th treated water pump. In addition the operating philosophy of the 37 km treated water pipeline was changed.

The project continued an on-going relationship that our staff have with the Waikato WTP. Jason Colton commissioned the original plant in 2002 and took it through 2 years of performance testing. Jason was also the lead designer and commissioning manager on the Stage 2 upgrade in 2004.

"They have significant expertise in water treatment, which provides value as a consultant."
